OVER 1,000 ATTEND NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTH FAIR

08/25/2017

CHICAGO – In cooperation with the North West Side Health Advisory Committee (NWSHAC), State Sen. Omar Aquino, D-Chicago, hosted the 21st Annual All Kids and Family Health Fair at Chicago Park District’s Mozart Park. The back to school health fair is a beloved tradition in the neighborhood.

“After a four year hiatus, I am excited to join the North West Side Health Advisory Committee in bringing back this neighborhood tradition,” Aquino said. “This free, public event will help kids and their families to have a safe, healthy and productive school year.”

Over 1,000 people including over 730 children, over 270 parents and over 50 senior citizens attended this year’s health fair. Participating and providing services at the fair were over 120 government offices, healthcare exhibitors and community organizations and nine mobile healthcare units. To prepare local students for the upcoming academic year, the NWSHAC and Sen. Aquino’s office partnered to give out over 600 backpacks containing school supplies.

Former state Sen. Miguel del Valle hosted the first health fair in 1992. At the first health fair, there were only 20 providers and a few hundred people in attendance.

“The health fair is a vital event that has served the community well over 21 years,” Del Valle said. “I’m really pleased that Senator Aquino has continued this tradition.”
Since then, thanks to the hard work of NWSHAC, the fair has grown into a beloved back to school tradition. Many original members of NWSHAC that helped to plan the event in 1992 also helped to plan this year’s fair.

“After an outpouring of support from the community, I am glad that we were able to bring this event back to the neighborhood. I wish all of the students and their families nothing but the best as they begin another school year,” Aquino said.
